Bedroom curtains are an essential part of your room decor, but they are more than just pretty fabric hanging in front of your windows.
They finish off a room and add softness and cosiness, but more importantly, they’re a vital element for creating a perfect night’s sleep.

Creating the perfect calm, relaxing, and welcoming bedroom isn’t difficult. You only need a few things, but getting them right is important. You need a good mattress, comfortable bedlinen, and last but definitely not least, great curtains.

Why bedroom curtains matter
Did you know that sleep disturbances can lead to adverse health effects? The right curtains have been shown to significantly improve sleep quality by blocking disruptive light and noise.
The Journal of Sleep Research conducted a study and discovered that participants using blackout curtains and earplugs reported a 32% reduction in sleep disturbances caused by light and noise. They also reported a 26% decrease in daytime sleepiness and a 19% improvement in overall well-being.

As you can see, bedroom curtains shouldn’t just be an afterthought but an important consideration for any bedroom. To ensure a peaceful night’s rest, they must serve multiple functions, including blocking out the light and acting as a barrier against external noise.
So, what should I keep in mind when choosing bedroom curtains?
Think about the curtains’ purpose and how you want them to function. Are they decorative, or do they need to provide privacy and block the light? Which room are they in?
Bedroom curtains almost always need different properties than hallway or living room curtains. An uninterrupted night’s sleep is crucial for our overall well-being, and the right curtains can make all the difference!

Our new curtains from TheHues are the best bedroom curtains as they don’t just block out light. They also block out sound, are thermally insulated, and are air-purifying. Amazing, right?
5 Key Features to Look for in Bedroom Curtains
1. Light
We always recommend using curtains with a blackout lining for bedroom curtains. The blackout lining ensures no light can enter the room and blocks the morning sun and artificial light, creating a dark space for deep sleep. It’s also perfect for anyone who works night shifts or is light-sensitive.
In addition to the blackout-lined curtains, we love to add a second layer of sheer curtains to dress the window. We have these gorgeous flax texture sheer curtains, which work perfectly in combination with heavier linen curtains. Even when the thicker darkening curtains are open, the light is beautifully softened by the sheer curtains, creating a calm and relaxing feel, perfect for a bedroom.

Pro Tip: Add an extra cm to the length of your blackout-lined curtains to ensure no light can peek through.
2. Sound
Living on a busy street or having noisy neighbours can be challenging. Soundproof curtains help reduce the noise, making your bedroom a quieter, more serene space.
The sound-absorbing layer reduces up to 15dB of noise. Combined with the thick linen curtains and the blackout fabric, our curtains have made a noticeable difference in the overall noise level in the room.
3. Heat
Did you know that curtains can help keep your room warm in winter and cool in summer?
Thermal curtains can reduce heat loss from a room by up to 25%. Our old house is always cold, so anything that can help us keep warm and save money has got to be a good thing.

Our thermally lined curtains work much better than I’d expected, and we can already feel a difference. The curtains also minimise the draughts from the windows and stop the warm air from escaping, making the room feel more comfortable to be in.
In summer, the curtains block direct sunlight and reduce the amount of heat entering the room. Light colours are particularly effective in reflecting sunlight away from the room, so we chose light-coloured curtains. We love that you can choose a lining that matches your curtains,
4. Privacy
Our bedroom faces the street, so we added a sheer curtain. It looks great but has practical reasons, too! It lets in the light but gives enough visual protection and stops people from being able to look in.

The heavier linen curtain provides all the protection you need when the light is on at night. It blocks both light coming into the room and anyone’s ability to look into it.
5. Style
I love the look of full-length curtains that go all the way from the ceiling to the floor. They create a dramatic, cosy look and provide maximum coverage. For a fuller, more luxurious look, opt for curtain panels that are 2-3 times the width of your window. You can also layer sheer curtains underneath for a soft, romantic vibe during the day.

Combining two fabrics with different qualities gives you that luxurious textile feel. The curtain closest to the window is a sheer style that lets the room be filled with light but still gives protection from anyone looking up from the street.
The curtain closest to the room is heavier and has a beautiful fall. The neutral colour feels calm and creates a serene atmosphere in the bedroom. We chose the linen curtains in the colour Angora. It’s a lovely soft greige with a subtle texture that feels perfect for a bedroom.

How do you hang curtains with a back tab from the ceiling?
At TheHues, you can choose different header types, which is perfect for personalising your curtains. We have a backtab header, which is meant for a curtain rod, but we still wanted to hang them from the ceiling as we love how floor-to-ceiling curtains add a luxury hotel vibe.

It’s totally possible to hang back tab curtains from a ceiling-mounted track rail. All you need are special gliders that clip over the back tabs. Add a glider to each back tab and insert them into the track rail.
Can curtains save on your energy bills? Do thermal curtains work?
I can’t believe what a difference our curtains have made. The room definitely retains the heat better. It’s obviously not very cold at the moment, but we’ll definitely run some tests in winter to see how much of an impact the thermal lining makes. So far, we’re very pleasantly surprised.
![Layers in thermal insulating blacout curtains](https://www.littlehouseonthecorner.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/layers-in-thermal-soundproof-blackout-curtains-804x536.jpg)
The soundproofing layer really works, too. Yes, of course, you can still hear the cars (we only have single glazing at the moment), but there is a big difference in the overall noise level in the room.
